Smoking and your eyes
Avoiding smoking, or quitting, is one of the single best investments you can make in your overall health, including the long term health of your eyes. In addition to the well known increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer, smoking is also a major risk factor for macular degeneration, as well as earlier-onset cataracts. Tobacco smoke is also a significant irritant which can exacerbate symptoms of dry eye syndrome, blepharitis, and allergic conjunctivitis. In people with thyroid disease, particularly Graves Disease, smoking is a major risk factor for thyroid-related eye problems which can include dry eyes, bulging eyes, misalignment of the eyes which can cause double vision, and even permanent loss of vision.

Fortunately, it is never too late to quit smoking and lower your risk for all of the health problems associated with smoking. Drs. Oser and Wertlieb have helped many people on the road to smoking cessation, and look forward to working with you to discuss various strategies that may help you take this crucial step in improving your health and the health of your eyes.
